My role:

UX designer leading the app and responsive website design from conception to delivery

Responsibilities

User research: summary

I conducted some interviews with some new college grads who were trying to find job after their graduations. Apparently most of them had some issues with finding a related job to their major and also some of them had difficulties to write a good resume based on the companies need.

They believed that they should learn some new subjects to be able to find a job and enter to the job market.

Some of them were nervous about the interviews and some others were not sure about the companies policies and ambience.

Persona

Problem statement:

Jack is a new college grads without any experience and needs to write an impressive resume to find a related job because he believes that he should grow himself in a field that he studied in.

Ideation

I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the market.

Digital wireframes

After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the First Job app. These designs focused on Helping People find their favorite first job in the field that they studied without any experience.

Low-fidelity prototype

To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that connected the user flow of searching for a job and apply to a job. View First Job  low-fidelity prototype

Usability study: parameters

Study type:

Unmoderated usability study

Location:

Canada, remote

Participants:

5 participants

Length:

30-40 minutes

Usability study: findings

These were the main findings uncovered by the usability study:

  • People want to filter their search based on their needs.
  • People Need to have access to some prepared templates to save time and get some ideas.
  • People need to subscribe for getting new job notifications.

Mockups

Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a clear section from the home screen to browse available Job.

High-fidelity prototype

The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.

Accessibility considerations

  1. Clear labels for interactive elements that can be read by screen readers.
  2. Initial focus of the home screen on personalized recommendations help define the primary task or action for the user.

Takeaways

Impact:

Users are able to search for jobs which do not need any experiences. So they are more relieved about finding a job. By using this app they are able to improve their knowledge for the interview and also learn something new in their majors.”

What I learned:

I learned that even though the problem I was trying to solve was a big one, diligently going through each step of the design process and aligning with specific user needs helped me come up with solutions that were both feasible and useful.

Next steps

  1. Conduct research on how successful the app is in reaching the goal to help people be confident and relax about finding a job.
  2. Add more educational resources for users to learn about finding a job.
